UNDER-EYE CIRCLES OFTEN CAUSE A TIRED AND SAD LOOKING FACE
Both men and women come to see me to treat under-eye concerns.
What are under eye-circles ?

The dark circles under the eyes anatomically correspond to the hollows situated under the lower eyelids within the borders of the orbital rim.
Under-eye circles can extend to the root of the nose, contributing to facial fatigue while moving outward towards the cheekbones, often referred to as “tear trough” which gives a tired and sad look to the face.
The appearance of under-eye circles/bags is linked to the progressive loss of fatty tissue located between the skin and the bone of the orbital rim. The contours of the orbital rim become visible due to the shrinking of the fat pads surrounding it beneath the skin.
The gaze then becomes skeletal and appears much older. A hyaluronic acid treatment will restore the lost volume to the under-eye zone.
The under-eye circles/bags have varying degrees of severity, depending on the patient’s profile and can show up at a very young age. They give a tired look and thus become the first signs of aging during social encounters. There are 2 cases:
Hollow under-eye circles
They can also be connected to under-eye bags and are the first signs of aging. They can also be linked to sunken cheekbones. When both hollows and bags appear, cosmetic surgery may be recommended, depending on their degree and dominance.
Dark under-eye circles
Dark under-eye circles often go back a long way because they can be hereditary, and in this case aesthetic medicine is the only solution.
Treatments vary according to the characteristics of the under-eye circles.
The secrets of hyaluronic acid-injection under-eye treatments
Hyaluronic acid treatment of under-eye circles/bags for both men and women:
All-around benefits:
-
Rejuvenates the gaze
-
Provides a less tired and sad appearance
The disadvantage of liposculpture (autologous fat injections) for under-eye circles/bags is that it remains a surgical procedure, which explains why many patients prefer medical fillers with hyaluronic acid injections. The hyaluronic acid injection takes place at Dr Benjamin Cozanet’s clinic and does not require any hospitalization, nor social downtime.
Which hyaluronic acid is used to treat under-eye circles?
For Dr Benjamin Cozanet, it is essential to opt for a hyaluronic acid which is specifically formulated for the under-eye zone, using a highly specific injection technique.
One must fully understand the anatomy of the under-eye zone so as not to inject too much of the product, nor to modify the gaze.
Hyaluronic acid for under-eye circles/bags must be low in hydrophilicity and should not be used for overcorrection.
The injection must be performed with an extremely thin needle or a flexible, blunt-tipped microcannula so that the procedure remains painless and allows for the precise positioning of the hyaluronic acid throughout the orbital rim.
Pre- hyaluronic acid injection guidelines
On the day of the hyaluronic acid injection into the under-eye zone, fasting isn’t necessary, but it is recommended to avoid alcohol consumption and to avoid sun exposure in the hours just prior to the injection.
Women should not apply any makeup, if so Dr Benjamin Cozanet will remove any traces of makeup before the injection and after having disinfected the skin.
It is important to minimize the risks of bleeding to the targeted zones by avoiding aspirin or anti-inflammatory consumption in the days prior and following the injections.
For maximal comfort, it is sometimes recommended to apply a topical anesthetic cream (Elma available at the pharmacy) on the injection points.
This white cream rapidly penetrates the skin tissue and becomes invisible, which allows you to maintain your usual activities while benefiting from the anesthesia.
It is equally recommended to begin a homeopathic treatment 3 days prior to the session (Arnica and Extranase which will have been prescribed). This treatment limits the risks of post-injection erythema or edema.
Post-hyaluronic acid injection guidelines
For the 2 hours following the hyaluronic acid injections into the under-eye zone, it is recommended to not practice any intensive sports. It is also important to massage the treated zones for 48h following the injections. Dr Benjamin Cozanet will provide all the post-injection guidelines and will show you the massage technique if necessary.
Excessive sun exposure, saunas and hammams are strongly discouraged in the 2 weeks following the under-eye hyaluronic acid injections.
No social downtime is required after the injections.
The post-injection effects are limited: light swelling will last 2-3 days and then disappear. This zone is highly sensitive and hematomas are to be expected.
The latest hyaluronic acid injection formulas last about 12 months or longer on the under-eye zone. The results must be natural and harmonious.
Sometimes, according to the patient’s profile, fat injections may be recommended or perhaps cosmetic surgery to the under-eye area.
Dr Benjamin Cozanet’s experience in this field will provide you with the best recommendations for your under-eye circles/bags. Sometimes several solutions are possible to get rid of or reduce under-eye imperfections. Make sure you see a doctor specializing in aesthetic medicine.
Combination treatments for Eye Rejuvenation
In certain cases, the under-eye circles/bags extend downward through a groove running from the eyelid to the cheekbone-the palpebromalar groove, tear trough or “valley of tears”- and by a hollowing out of the cheekbone due to fat loss.
Hyaluronic acid can be used to correct both the under-eye circles and to restore sunken cheekbones.
An Ultherapy Prime® treatment could work in conjunction with hyaluronic acid when there is also a drooping eyebrow or a sagging upper eyelid.
Skin firming and smoothing with a photorejuvenation laser could also be used together with hyaluronic acid injections on the under-eye zone, if needed.
